歌の内容
この歌詞ではweが主語になっていますが、これは誰でしょう。
一番ぴったりくる解釈は愛し合う夫婦でしょうか。
第一連では、遠い昔、おそらくは新婚の頃、街中で聞いた愛の歌に心打たれたことを述べています。
炉火の光の弱まる暗がりの中でその歌が夢の中に織り込まれたと言っていますから、夫婦の寝室でその歌が思い出されたのかもしれません。
第二連は今のことを述べています。
もう中年の夫婦になっているのでしょうか、人生の苦しさを実感する世代ですが、
夕暮れになるとその愛の歌が聞こえてきて心を元気づけてくれるようです。
第三連は死を前にした未来のことを述べています。

語句の説明
第１連 Low to our hearts Love sang an old sweet song
本来の語順はLove sang an old sweet song low to our
heartsです。
このLoveはloveと小文字で表記されることもあるようですが、擬人化の用法ですので頭文字の方がよいでしょう。
普通名詞が頭文字化されると、その単語に命が吹き込まれて擬人化あるいは神格化されます。

この歌は２０世紀最大の小説であるJames
JoyceのUlyssesのライトモチーフとして使われたことで有名です。
主人公ブルームの妻モリーはコンサート・ツアーで『ドン・ジョバンニ』のデュエット曲「お手をどうぞ」とともに
この歌を歌うことになっており、その練習と称して愛人のボイランと会おうとしています。
『ドン・ジョバンニ』はドン・ファンの話ですから浮気と関わり、Love's
Old Sweet
Songは変わらぬ夫婦の愛に関わる歌です。
この二つの歌は小説で何度か言及されています。
ですが最後のモリーの独白で心に浮かぶのは夫婦の歌の方で、モリーが愛人と別れ、夫ブルームの元に戻るだろうことが暗示されています。
