「弱・強」のリズムが基本で、それが１行に５回続きます。
脚韻はababcdcdの形で、１，３行目のshining, pining（女性韻）、２，４行目のbirth, worth（男性韻）、
５，７行目のrejoices, voices（女性韻）、６，８行目のmorn, born（男性韻）です（９行目はリフレイン）。
女性韻の場合、「弱・強」で終わらず、さらに弱音節が一つ追加され、「弱・強・弱」となって余韻を響かせます。
この形は第２連、第３連でも同じです。
この第１連では２、４行目のリズムが少し不規則ですが、第４詩脚を「強・弱」、第５詩脚も「強（・弱）」と理解すればほかの行と同様、
５詩脚の構成となります。
文中の韻では１行目のnight, brightly, shiningの/ai/の母韻、３行目のLong, layの/l/の頭韻、５行目のweary, worldの/w/の頭韻、
６行目のglorious, mornの/ɔː/の母韻、７行目のknees, voicesの/z/の子韻、８行目のnight, divine, Christの/ai/の母韻、divine, when, bornの/n/の子韻が目立ちます。
文法面では、３行目のLong lay the world in sin and error piningの本来の語順は、The world lay long in sin and error pining、
６行目のFor yonder breaks a new and glorious mornは、For a new and glorious morn breaks yonderとなります。
倒置形にするのはリズムを整えたり脚韻を揃えたりするためです。
なおmornはmorningのことで、詩ではよく使われます。朝はもともとはmornでしたが、
eveningにならって-ingを付けたものです。
breaksも英語特有の表現で、朝が「壊れる」のではなく、朝が「始まる（現れる）」の意になります。
何か（夜）が壊れて新しく何か（朝）が生まれるイメージです。

脚韻はbeamingとgleaming、standとland、mangerとstranger、friendとbendになります。文中の韻では１行目のLed, lightの/l/の頭韻、serenely, beamingの/iː/の母韻、 ３行目のsweetly, gleamingの/iː/の母韻、５行目のlay, lowlyの/l/の頭韻、７行目のneed, weaknessの/iː/の母韻、８行目のBehold, before, bendの/b/の頭韻があります。
文法面では４行目の文はthe wise men came hereの倒置形、６行目も本来はborn to be our friend in all our trialsとなります。
試練を受けている我々の友となるために生まれて、の意です。
７行目の後半は、no stranger to our weaknessの倒置形で、no stranger to ~とは、～をよく知っている、の意です。
８行目の文もBend before Him lowlyの倒置形になります。
内容面では前半にlight, beaming, glowing, light, gleamingと光のイメージが続きます。

文中の韻では１行目のlove, anotherの/ʌ/の母韻、３～７行目のbreak,
slave, name, grateful, raise, praise, praiseの/ei/の母韻、４、５行目のcease, Sweetの/iː/の母韻があります。
３行目は第３詩脚のところにカンマがありますので、
その休止を１音節として数えて、「弱・強」と理解します。
文法面では３行目はHe shall break chainsの倒置形、５行目はwe raise sweet hymns ~ の倒置形、７行目はwe praise、８行目もproclaim his power and glory evermoreの
倒置形になります。
